Community Education and Outreach

LIA offers a variety of interactive workshops focused on informing the public about their civil rights and liberties when navigating a sensitive immigration status, and dealing with the police, ICE, Border Patrol, & other law enforcement agencies. Additionally, we co-host workshops with attorneys & other partners on topics that affect the immigrant community. Our community partners include agencies like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Immigrant Legal Resource Center(ILRC), Texas Immigration Legal Council (TXILC & Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid (TRLA).

Our community workshops offer families the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to become active participants in their own lives. Our workshops are led by professional and trained facilitators, and attendees will receive resources and support to help them become informed and empowered. LIA hosts DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) Clinic events which provide an opportunity for DACA recipients seeking to renew or get help with the application process along with other financial support. We partner up with organizations like FWD.US, Casa de Misericordia, RAICES, & TRLA to provide a safe space & opportunities to speak with attorneys free of charge.

For 13 years, DACA has provided protection and opportunities to over 834,000 Dreamers. While the program continues to offer deportation relief, many still await a permanent solution.

Texas just passed school vouchers into law, and Laredo’s kids will pay the price.

They claim vouchers help working families, but the truth is:
• Public schools lose funding when students leave
• Wealthy families benefit most
• Immigrant students are completely excluded

In Laredo, where private schools only have 1,680 seats (vs. 61,000 public school kids), vouchers will trap most students in underfunded classrooms. That means fewer resources, fewer opportunities, and a cycle of poverty that holds our city back.

We can’t let this happen. Join our teach-in to learn how to fight for Laredo’s future.

This Father’s Day, we recognize and honor all fathers—those present with their families, and those separated from them by immigration detention, incarceration, or deportation. Too many are unjustly held, not only torn from their children, but also from their fundamental freedoms. No one should face fear of separation simply for seeking a life with dignity and respect.

To every father who leads with love and resilience: we honor you today and always.

Today, DACA recipients, who came to the U.S. at an average age of six and have lived here
for an average of 25 years, are fully integrated into society. 🏡 DACA recipients are long-standing members of the community including business owners, parents, teachers, nurses, friends and loved ones. 🧡 They are assets to Laredo and Webb County. 🦋

Ending DACA would be a catastrophe for the U.S. economy and separate many families.

While our ultimate goal remains for Congress to pass legislation that creates a clear pathway
to citizenship for all, the outcome of DACA and Keeping Families Together cases will determine the immediate future of millions of families and immigrants in the U.S. 🚨
